After traveling around the United States and Canada for several years on some interesting hunting excursions, Jeff Leonard and Bruce Schmitter, two avid outdoorsmen, felt that St. Joseph was long overdue to have an outdoor store where sportsmen could come and get geared up by folks who understand how important your time afield is!
J & B Outdoors provides a full service archery pro shop and range, firearms, hunting, fishing, and trapping supplies and more. We strive to create an atmosphere where any outdoors person from beginner to expert would feel at home and enjoy a great experience along with friendly customer service provided by some of the best staff in the area.
We scoured St. Joseph for the perfect location and found our initial spot at the intersection of Picket and Leonard Road with interstate exposure. With a lot of long hours and determination the doors of J & B Outdoors were opened in August of 2012.
In March of 2019, we moved to our current location at 2207 N. Belt Hwy. (Suite B) in the Anderson Ford Plaza. We feel that this location is much more convenient for our customers and still offers all the amenities our old location offered!
Our firearms department features top companies such as Benelli, Franchi, Stoeger, Uberti, Remington, Ruger, Savage, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, Mossberg, and more. We are one of the largest ammunition retailers in Northwest Missouri. In addition, we have a wide array of firearms accessories and optics, including names like Vortex, BogPod, Caldwell, Weaver, Carlsons, Hoppes, Otis, and many more.
Wanting to offer something for all outdoorsmen, we have included an expansive fishing department that specializes in heavy catfishing gear although we also carry what you need for a great day of fishing for bass, crappie, and panfish. We have a great selection of frozen and prepared baits.
No outdoor store would be complete without a huge selection of hunting gear and accessories. We've got you covered with everything from tree stands & saddles, game calls, scents, and other gear you just can't head afield without. We stock top brands such as Avian, Primos, Hunter Specialties, Woodhaven, Trophy, Latitude and many more.
One of the unique items that J & B Outdoors offers is a full selection of trapping gear and accessories. Northwest Missouri is a region with a huge demand for trapping supplies yet no one in the area offers such a wide and diverse selection.

J & B Outdoors is owned by J & B Outdoors LLC, a limited liability company with two members, Bruce Schmitter and Jeff Leonard.
Jeff Leonard is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelors Degree in Recreation with emphasis on Facilities Management.
Jeff was the Outdoor Writer/Photographer for the St. Joseph News Press for nearly 7 years. He has also done freelance work for several magazines including Missouri Game and Fish. Prior to that he spent a large majority of his career working as a Park Ranger. He also hosted an Outdoor Radio Show on 680 KFEQ AM for nearly five years.
Jeff has been an avid outdoorsman his entire life. He has hunted all over Northwest Missouri, North America, and South Africa for everything from turkey, deer, upland birds and waterfowl to whitetails, elk, black bears, African Plains Game and even wild hogs. He has fished for walleyes and pike in Minnesota and Canada, a variety of saltwater species in the Caribean, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic/Pacific Oceans along with trout and grayling in the clear mountain streams of Montana and Alaska.
Bruce Schmitter is a graduate of Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State University, with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in marketing. Prior to opening J&B Outdoors, Bruce spent over eighteen years working for the Grace Companies, located in Phoenix, Arizona and St. Joseph, Missouri.
Bruce grew up in rural northeast Missouri where he began hunting and fishing at a young age guided by his father and grandfather. An avid hunter, he has had the privileges of hunting almost every species available in the Midwest and has enjoyed many hunting excursions to Canada, South Africa, and the western states. In addition he takes every opportunity to do a little deep sea fishing in the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii.
